Islamabad- Pakistani opposition parties demanded Thursday that Prime MinisterYousuf Raza Gilani resign after he was convicted of contempt of courtover allegations of corruption against the president.
NawazSharif, leader of Pakistan Muslim League major (Nawaz) party twiceserved as prime minister, said Gilani should stop and call freshelections.
"ThePrime Minister should resign immediately. He should step down withoutcausing further crisis," Sharif said live on private Geo televisionstation.
"Thecourt verdict is based on truth and reality. Should punish the primeminister with a heavy heart, but the prime minister himself is blamed.
"The Prime Minister himself invited this situation," she added.
TheSupreme Court convicted of contempt Gilani on Thursday in his refusalto write the authorities in Switzerland asking them to reopen theinvestigation into corruption in President Asif Ali Zardari.
He was given only a small sentence, detained for a few minutes until court adjourned, but can still be forced out of office.
Sharif,which party rules the largest Pakistani province of Punjab, said PML-Nwill decide the future course of action if Gilani attends parliamentafter the sentence.
Chiefof the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-islami that party Munawar Hussain alsourged the prime minister to leave as he had "lost ground manners" afterthe judgment.
"The prime minister should have declared itself by now that I have no more prime minister," he said.
"TheSupreme Court sentenced him to a dignified manner and it also acquiredits decision implemented. He is now a convicted person and he can notremain the prime minister today," Hussain told Geo.
