NEW DELHI: India Thursday demonstrated the ability to launch nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and Agni-V hit a target more than 5,000 miles away.

With this, India has joined an elite group of nations that have mastered this technology.

The 5.000 km-range missile gives India the possibility of hitting targets in China, including Beijing, Eastern Europe, East Africa and the Australian coast.

"This launch has given a message to the world that India has the ability to design, develop, build and manufacture missiles in this class, and we are today, a missile power," VK Saraswat, Director General, Defence Research and Development Organisation , said.

He said the missile launch was an important milestone in readiness for the strategic defense of the country.

The Agni-V is 17.5 tall, solid fuel, three-stage rocket with a launch weight of 50 tons, which includes a 1.5-ton warhead.

This was the first launch of the missile after the country's defense scientists began working on it three years ago.

"The first flight itself was demonstrated in the user project success mode" Avinash Chander, Project Director of Agni-V, said, adding that it was indeed a rare achievement to launch missile in such a short duration.

The missile was launched at 8:07 hours Thursday from a mobile launcher on Wheeler Island off Orissa coast. It reached its peak at 600 km and then again into the atmosphere to find a target over 5000 km away from the launch site.

The launch was monitored by three ships stationed in the Indian Ocean and the radars were also to trace the full path missile.

The staff on the ships spotted a fireball when the missile re-enters the atmosphere on its way to hitting the target.

"The sleek missile, within a few seconds of its blast-off from the island launch pad, roared majestically into the sky, leaving its path a trail of thin orange and white smoke before they disappear," one defense official said at the launch site

Saraswat said the missile was achieved despite the stringent export control regimes by the developed countries have imposed on India.

"This shows that confidence in this technology now becomes a reality," he said.

Saraswat said the DRDO would implement two validation tests before starting production of this missile.

The DRDO chief said that barring some electronic components, the Agni V a completely original product.

"More than 80 percent of the missile is indigenous, except for the electronic components that we import. Everything is designed, developed and produced in our industry and our laboratories," he said.

On the road ahead, Saraswat said the DRDO will now develop multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles for anti-satellite system.

"Today we have done a great event for the country. All the team work that has gone into the last three years has provided a fruitful result," Tessy Thomas, chief scientist, project Agni-V, said.

A senior DRDO scientist said that the missile would be ready for insertion into the armed forces in 2014.

"The 5000-plus kilometer range meets our strategic needs and also we are developing a deterrent capability," the former DRDO chief M Natarajan said.

"We need to develop a missile to meet our strategic needs and identified threat perceptions and this missile will answers all of them," he said.

China reacts cautiously, says India does not rival

BEIJING / NEW DELHI: responding cautiously to India tests Agni-V missile, China Thursday said the two countries are not rivals and enjoy the "sound" relationships although sources in the Chinese company feels that the launch could lead to another round of arms race in the region.

"China has taken note of reports on India's missile launch. The two countries have a healthy relationship." Under (recently organized) BRICS meeting (in Delhi) that management had agreed to take the relationship further and to boost the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership, "Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a media briefing in Beijing when he was asked about the launch.

In Delhi, said diplomatic sources in the Chinese Embassy on "Agni-V launch may lead to another round of arms race in this part of the world."

They were also critical of the media commentary on the successful launch of the nuclear capable 5000 km-range Agni-V missile, said that it sounded provocative. Asked if China was worried since most of the country would come under the Agni range, Liu said in Beijing that "both countries have new powers. We are not rivals. We are partners. We should cherish the hard-earned progress in cooperation."

To another question whether it will affect regional stability, he said, "We hope that Asian countries can contribute to peace and stability."

But China's state-run Global Times came out with a strong editorial criticizing the launch, claiming that the Chinese nuclear power is more "powerful and reliable," and New Delhi has "no chance" to catch up.

"India should not overestimate its strength. Although it has missiles that could reach most parts of China, it does not mean it will get everything from being arrogant during disputes with China," Global Times, the influential tabloid of China's ruling Communist Party said in its editorial.

Known for his scathing attacks on countries that have disputes with China, the daily said, "India should be clear that China's nuclear power is stronger and more reliable."

"For the foreseeable future, India will stand no chance," it said in its editorial titled "India is being swept away by the military deception." "India should not overestimate the value of its Western allies, and the profits it could benefit from taking part in a containment of China. If it treats long-range strategic missiles to deter China and awakens an additional hostility, it may be seriously wrong, "it said. The paper noted that India has moved strongly in the development of missile technology.

"It was launched Agni IV with a range of 3.500 km last year. Indian public opinion has long seen China as its base for military development." It looks like India's path to increase its military strength have not met too many obstacles. India is still poor, and lagging behind in infrastructure construction, but the community is very supportive of developing nuclear power, and the West chooses to ignore India's breach of the nuclear and missile programs control treaties, "the editorial charged.

The West remains "silent about the fact that India's military spending has increased by 17 percent in 2012, and the country has again become the largest arms importer in the world," it said, without referring to China's own huge defense stated budget of $ 106 billion for this year.
